Bournemouth
Amazing beaches, the shingle to the East has turned into soft, soft sand, the whole area is surprisingly hilly which gives great vistas over the rooftops and sea.
In a funny way Bournemouth reminds me of Scarborough, but don't tell Bournemouthians that!
Yet again the pier comes to life after dusk.

Mounts Bay
I'm on real home turf now, my home and studio is only 1 mile from
Marazion beach.
It's a wonderful place to be at any time of the year. In the summer
with the crazy, clashing, hot colours of wind breaks and beach balls
to the winter hues of wind bashed dog walkers and mad kite surfers.

Blackpool
WOW, everything I expected really.
The Blackpool tower is massive, the beach is massive, the lights are
massive, the signs are bright, the chippys are crammed side by side
and all look splendidly run down.
The tramway which dominates the seafront adds some great composition
with shiny tracks and high overhead wires.
There is nothing classy about this place but looks head and shoulders
above Brighton in the fun stakes....
...I've just found the 'Pleasure Beach' with the Pepsi Max
rollercoaster...its massive!

Lands End
That's a big sea!
I can feel the salt spray hit me as I paint this, cold and
refreshing, mixing with the paints, out on the rocks at Lands End. Don't try this at home!

Mousehole
I know Mousehole very well, and I was really attracted to the light
and shade on this painting.
I always love the harbour wall in bright, bright sun and the village
in shadow.
When Stanhope Forbes painted his celebrated Mousehole paintings what
colours did he use for the harbour walls?
Ochres?, Naples?...answers on a postcard please.

The beautiful Scillonian at dawn, making preparations for its daily
voyage to the Scillies.

waking up.

Fowey
From every angle Fowey looks continental, except the climate!
Stunningly situated on the banks of the River Fowey (the inspiration
for Wind in the Willows), Fowey is filled with beautiful architecture
and even more beautiful boats of all shapes and sizes.
I choose to paint this view from the quayside at Polruan looking
upstream at Fowey.

Dungeness
A really amazing place, unbelievable, glaring light, crambe maritima and butterflies everywhere.
Absolute silence except for bird song and the not so distant nuclear power plant tannoy system, dictating instructions to the workers. Derek Jarman's Californian poppies are looking great! Quiet, quiet, quiet mmmmm.... quiet.... and still.

That Malakoff view, you know, the one where the buses

Ah, Paignton, buckets and spades, ice cream, piers, red

...apparantly Issac Singer of sewing machine fame loved the snug
little harbour at Paignton and built a house based on the Palace of
Versailles!

Aldeburgh
Met a dog walker from London on the beach at Aldeburgh.
"Lovely innit!?, I come up ere every weekend, somfin about the place
innit?, you from round ere?"
"No, Im up from Penzance" I reply
"Oh, thass nice too, but theres somfin different about the East coast
and the West - I fink its that bleedin Norf Sea."

Beadnell
A charming little village, snuggled around a tiny, perfect harbour
with half a dozen beautiful cobbles.
This place really reminds me of Scilly. The same houses, small
quayside and small roads covered in sand and marram.
Backed by massive lime kilns which the N.T. own and the fishermen use
to store their gear.

Bamburgh
Soft white beaches and acres of dunes, all dominated by a castle that
puts Windsor to shame.
Built of stone almost the same colour as the Alhambra, a honey/pink/
rose stone.

Heavy rain over the Farne islands, on its way...
The tide is coming in fast, the signs say to cross until 8.30 and its
now 8.10 or I'll be cut off - bad timing on either my part or the tides!

Brancaster
Very exposed, salt marsh dunes, stinging hale - a party of school
kids on the beach - millions of razor shells, whelks and mussels in
the impossibly soft sand.
Dark gravy grey wild north sea seems as though it will swallow you. An Arctic shore - ducks and geese flighting in on the arctic winds. Nothing between the north Norfolk shore and the polar icepack. Bleak isolation, the wind is made of water and ice, only the ducks
and geese can tell you what its like out there…
